Your first target is a guess. After a month, it is measured.
- Every month, it checks your target against your weight.
- It also corrects for photo counts that are a bit off, high or low.
- Nothing changes until you say yes.
A loop that corrects your target
Four steps, every 30 days. Each month adds another month of your meals and weigh-ins. So your target fits you better each time.
The sum, with one real month
Your body uses what you eat. When you lose weight, it also uses some of its own store. Add the two, and you have what your body really uses.
Why a month? Your weight goes up and down by a kilo from day to day. That is water and salt, not fat. It takes about a month of weigh-ins to see what your body really does.
Why your first target is only a guess
At setup, your target comes from a formula. It uses your age, height, weight and how much you move. The formula is made for an average person.
- The formula is often close, but not always. For about 3 people in 4, it is within 10% of what their body burns at rest. For the 1 in 4, it is further off.
- You describe how much you move in one word. You pick "light" or "active" at setup. The formula turns that word into hundreds of calories.
- Your scale knows better. A month of your meals and your weight replaces both guesses with a number measured on you.
300 kcal a day apart. If your target is 300 too high, you lose about 1 kg a month less than you planned.

Photo counts can be a bit off. The check-in corrects for it.
On a typical meal, Snapkin is within 17% of a kitchen scale. Over a week, within 10%. The error that is left can be a bit high or a bit low. Which way depends on your meals and your photos. So no fixed correction can fix it.
With a target from a formula
- Your target is 2,250 real calories.
- Say your meals count 5% low. Then 2,250 logged is really about 2,370 eaten.
About 120 kcal a day more than you planned. That is half a kilo a month.
With a target from your check-in
- Your target is measured in the same counts as your meals.
- If your meals count 5% low, or 5% high, the measured number is off by the same amount.
The two cancel out. The pace you picked is the pace you get.
The same goes for small things you always forget. The milk in your coffee every morning is missing from both numbers. So it cancels out too.
What it does not do. It does not change the count of a single meal. It makes your target fit the way Snapkin counts your food. That is the number that decides your weight.
Careful with your food
A new target changes what you eat every day. So the check-in only suggests one when the numbers are clear.
- It needs a real month. At least 20 days with meals and 4 weigh-ins. One weigh-in must be in the first week and one in the last. With less, it tells you what is missing and changes nothing.
- Small gaps do not count. If you are within 150 kcal of your target, you are on track. The sum itself can be off by about that much for one person.
- It moves in small steps. At most 250 kcal at a time. The next check-in can take the rest.
- You decide. Use the new target, pick a slower pace, or keep yours. Nothing changes until you tap.
- It never goes too low. Never under 1,200 kcal a day for women and 1,500 for men. And never more than 35% under what you burn.
- It never cuts a target you are already over. If you ate more than your target, the target is not the problem. It offers you a slower pace instead.
When it checks in
For people who want to lose weight or keep it steady.
Every 30 days.
Counted from the day your target started, or from your last check-in.
Sooner when your weight changes a lot.
A new weight needs a new target. But never within two weeks of the last check-in.
At once when you reach your goal weight.
Then it suggests a target to keep your weight there.
Not for building muscle. Weight you gain while building muscle says little about your target. So the check-in does not run then.
Log one month and see your real number
It's that simple. It keeps working through restaurants, holidays and busy weeks. There is nothing else to keep up with.
