Why your steps and workouts do not change your calorie target

Snapkin reads your steps and your active energy and shows them on the home screen, without a ring around either. It does not add them to what you may eat. A daily activity estimate is already included in the starting target; automatic workout additions could count some activity twice.

The evidence for it

All three numbers are from one living review. Heart-rate and energy estimates were assessed in different studies and conditions. Accurate heart rate does not guarantee accurate energy expenditure.

A starting suggestion during setup

With health access enabled, setup reads the previous 14 completed local days. Today is excluded. We average days with step readings and require at least 7 recorded days before suggesting an activity level. Missing days are omitted, not treated as zero. Both the average and its number of recorded days are shown. The seven-day minimum is a product coverage rule, not a validated clinical threshold.

The selected level is editable. Steps may miss cycling, swimming and strength training, and a phone left at home may undercount the day. These bands cannot establish how many calories a particular person burns.

Active-energy readings are averaged separately and displayed with their own coverage. They neither select the activity level nor add calories to the budget. Only the activity category you confirm is saved to your account; the readings remain on your device. The confirmed category feeds the existing daily expenditure estimate during setup. This is a starting estimate, not ongoing adjustment of your budget from the watch.

Availability is not guaranteed by connecting a store. Health Connect documents sparse aggregate results, source-priority deduplication, and its default 30-day history window. HealthKit does not reveal whether read access was denied. An empty or unavailable history leaves the activity question for you to answer.

Why we show both histories without inventing an energy cutoff

An optional foldout below the activity choices shows aligned daily charts for steps and active energy, with separate scales, averages and coverage. Tapping a date shows both readings; a missing reading is distinct from a recorded zero. The suggestion remains explicitly steps-based and editable. Someone who cycles, swims or lifts should consider that training when confirming it.

Mitchell et al. (2024) reviewed 166 studies of resistance-exercise energy expenditure, including 31 using wearable monitors. Estimates varied widely; even laboratory methods have difficulty capturing the anaerobic contribution. That supports showing the extra signal, but does not validate a wearable-kcal cutoff for our activity categories. Steps also miss activity: neither chart establishes a person's energy needs.

We therefore do not add steps and active calories together, or automatically promote a category from an arbitrary calorie threshold. This leaves a limitation for non-walking exercise, which the visible histories and editable question address without claiming a validated combined classifier. Only the confirmed category is saved.

What the review found

Lambe et al. (2026), a living systematic review and meta-analysis in npj Digital Medicine, pooled 82 studies covering 430,052 participants across 14 Apple Watch metrics. On energy expenditure it is blunt. Margins of error “were often large, both during exercise and at rest”. All six studies that calculated MAPE reported values of 20% or higher in at least one test condition. There was no clear pattern by exercise intensity, so these results do not supply a universal correction factor.

Heart-rate errors were generally lower than energy-expenditure errors in this review. MAPE averages absolute percentage differences relative to the reference measurement; it is not a signed bias, a confidence interval, or an error bound for your walk. Multiplying a watch reading by the largest reported MAPE cannot tell you how many calories it overestimated.

An hour’s walk: active calories or total calories?

There is no single calorie cost for an hour’s walk. Body weight, speed, slope and terrain matter. Apple’s calorimetry white paper distinguishes active calories above resting expenditure from total calories, which include resting expenditure. A reading around 200 active kcal can be plausible; its size alone does not show whether the watch is accurate.

The 2024 Adult Compendium lists level walking at 2.5 mph as 3.0 MET, 2.8–3.4 mph as 3.8 MET, and 3.5–3.9 mph as 4.8 MET. The examples below use an illustrative 80 kg adult, not an individual measurement.

Using the Compendium convention of 1 MET ≈ 1 kcal/kg/hour, total kcal ≈ MET × kg × hours; active kcal ≈ (MET − 1) × kg × hours. The resting allowance here is 80 kcal for the hour. This is a population-level approximation, not Apple’s personalized algorithm.

Thus, around 400 total kcal can fit a brisk walk in this example, while around 200 active kcal can fit a moderate one. Neither is a universal one-hour value. Our earlier 400-kcal tile omitted these assumptions; its accompanying “±600 kcal” conversion of MAPE was invalid and has been removed.

The evidence against, and the limits of what we are relying on

This is one review, and its energy-expenditure section is small. Only 8 of the 82 studies tested energy expenditure, with 270 people in total, 63% male, and the review notes that participants were “predominantly young physically active adults”. Five of those eight tested an Apple Watch Series 2 or older. Newer hardware and newer models may well be better, and this review cannot tell you that they are not.

It is also Apple Watch only. We apply the same rule to Health Connect, which collects data from Fitbit, Garmin, Samsung and others, and we have not read a comparable review for those. The evidence points the same way consistently enough that we would be surprised if they were different, but that is a judgement rather than a citation.

And there is a real cost to our choice. Somebody who really does run 15 km on a Sunday gets a target that ignores it, and they will have to raise their own goal. We think a plain number you adjust on purpose beats a flattering one worked out from an estimate that can be wrong by half. But people who train seriously have a fair complaint here.

There is a second argument we find convincing and are not citing, because we have not read the original studies. It says the body partly makes up for exercise by burning less elsewhere. If so, even a perfectly measured workout does not raise your total daily burn by the same amount. If that holds, it strengthens the case above. We will add it here properly, with numbers, when we have read the studies rather than summaries of them.
