Protein first

Three macros drawn the same size is three decisions a day.

Reach your protein target and the carb and fat tracking becomes less important. Every other tracker gives you protein, carbs and fat rings - we focus on the protein and the rest sorts itself out.

€14.99 a month, or €99.99 a year. Three days free to start, no free tier, no upsells later. The App Store or Google Play takes the payment and shows you the price and tax for your country before you confirm.

The Snapkin day screen: calories eaten against the goal, a large protein ring reading 180 grams with "reached" under it, a smaller added sugar ring beside it, and the day's meals listed below.

Three reasons, and none of them is that protein is magic

It is not a health food and it does not burn fat. It is the macro whose absence you notice, and that turns out to be the more useful property.

  • 1. It keeps you fuller than carbs or fat do. Not the most filling thing on a plate, that is volume and water. But of the three it is the one that gets you to dinner without the four o'clock snack.
  • 2. It keeps what you meant to keep. Losing weight costs muscle as well as fat. Enough protein keeps the loss on the side you meant.
  • 3. It is one decision, not three. Build the plate around the protein and the carbs and the fat land roughly where they should. One thing per meal is a habit. Three is a spreadsheet.

Your number, not a number

The target is worked out from your weight, your height, your age, how much you move and which direction you are going, in the six questions the app asks when you set it up. It moves when you tell it your weight has moved.

  • 1. It is set once and revisited, not tuned daily. A target you adjust every time you miss it is not a target. The app recalculates when the inputs change and otherwise leaves it alone.
  • 2. Reaching it is the event, not exceeding it. Cross the line and the dial says so and stops counting against you. Nothing above the target counts against you, and nothing needs to.
  • 3. Carbs and fat are still there. Smaller, and on the same screen. A glance, not a decision -- and the drawing says so.
The Snapkin settings screen: calories per day as a ceiling set to 2,400 and protein per day as a floor set to 165, each with a minus and a plus, above a Save goals button.

The other number Snapkin puts on the screen

Added sugar, as a ceiling with its own small ring: sugar that was put in, not sugar that grew there. The banana does not count against you and the granola does. It goes amber when you pass it, never red, because a day over the line is information and not a verdict.

That is the whole habit, and it survives restaurants, holidays and Thursdays, because there is nothing to keep up.
