Weight tracking

Step on the scale. Snapkin reads the number itself.

  • Reads your weight from Apple Health and Health Connect.
  • Almost every smart scale already works.
  • Nothing to link, nothing to type.
The Snapkin history screen: a bar chart of calories per day with 23 of 27 days under the goal, and under it a weight card falling from 91.9 to 89.9 kilograms at -0.3 kg a week, drawn as a smooth line through the scattered dots, one dot for each weighing.

How it gets here

Your scale already writes your weight to your phone. Snapkin reads it from there.

Your scale needs no Snapkin account. Its own app already puts your weight into Apple Health or Health Connect. Snapkin picks it up from there.

Snapkin only reads. It never writes to Apple Health or Health Connect. It reads thirty days of weighings when you open the app, and your height once. Active calories, only if you turn that on.

Scales that already work

Nobody had to make a deal to be on this list. It is not a list we maintain. If your scale's app writes weight to Apple Health or Health Connect, Snapkin reads it. And they all do.

Your scale not shown here? It very probably still works. Does its app have the Apple Health or Health Connect switch? Almost all do. No app? Typing your weight in takes about four seconds.

Every logo here belongs to the company that owns it. None of them has a deal with Snapkin. None of them is endorsing it. They are on this page for one reason: their app writes to Apple Health or Health Connect. Snapkin needs nothing else.

The dots are what the scale said. The line is what is actually happening.

Weigh yourself two mornings in a row. You can be two kilos apart with nothing really changed: salt, water, last night's dinner. Those swings are bigger than the change you are looking for.

  • The line is an average. Recent days count more. Each weighing pulls the line about a tenth of the way towards it. So one heavy morning barely moves it. Two weeks of them do.
  • Gaps are counted in days, not in readings. Weigh yourself Monday, then three weeks later. That second reading counts for more than a Tuesday one would. Most trackers average readings, not time.
  • The rate is in kilos per week. A kilo a week can cost you muscle. Half a kilo is a sensible limit for most. It uses the chart's days: thirty, unless you change it.
Weight -0.3 kg/week
91.9 89.9
Thirty days of one person's weighings. Every faded dot is what the scale said. The line is what Snapkin reads out of them.

Your weight also corrects your calorie target. Once a month, Snapkin compares your weight with what you logged. Then it offers a target that fits your body.

What you type stays

Four rules about which number is kept. They all come down to the same thing. A sync that quietly overwrites what you typed is worse than no sync at all.

The weight card with the typing sheet open on it, asking what the scale says, with 82.4 in the box and Save beside Cancel.
Every day, and yours to change
  • A weight you typed is never overwritten. Correct a day by hand, and the next sync leaves it alone, for good. So your correction stays. It does not vanish the next time you open the app.
  • The earliest reading of the day is the one kept. Your weight swings a kilo and a half over a day, from food and water alone. Weighing again after dinner changes nothing.
  • A reading is filed by the day you took it. Not by our server's clock. At half past one in the morning in Brussels, the server's clock still says the day before.
  • One odd reading does not stop the rest. Snapkin skips a number that cannot be a person's weight. A reading from somebody else is not caught, so delete it by hand.

Steps stay on the phone. Active energy does too, unless you ask

The same permission that reads your weight also reads those two. They are treated completely differently.

Steps never leave your phone.

Active energy stays there too, unless you turn on measured movement. Then one number a day is saved to your account. A check makes sure nothing else is sent.

They do not move your calorie target, unless you ask.

Across 82 studies, the Apple Watch's error on calories burned runs from 9.71% to 151.66%. That is too far off to trust.

Your weight is the one that is sent, because the chart is on the server.

It is on your account, with your meals. So the trend is still there on a new phone. Steps never go with it.

What the research says about wearables and calories

Weigh yourself once and watch the line

It's that simple. It keeps working through restaurants, holidays and busy weeks. There is nothing else to keep up with.
